Drywall calculator
Enter the room size and openings. A 12 × 12 ft room with 8 ft walls, the ceiling, one door and one window has about 492 sq ft to cover: 17 sheets of 4 × 8 with 10% extra.

How the calculator works
–
Wall area is the room's perimeter times the wall height. Add the ceiling if you are boarding it, take off doors and windows, and divide by the area of one sheet. The default door (3 × 7 ft = 21 sq ft) and window (15 sq ft) are typical sizes; change them to match your room.
Choosing a sheet size
- 4 × 8: easiest to carry and lift alone, but more joints to tape.
- 4 × 12: fewer joints on long walls, but heavy and needs two people, especially on ceilings.
- Sheets hung horizontally on 8 ft walls (two rows of 4 ft) leave one long joint at a comfortable height to finish.
Taking off every door and window gives the minimum. Small openings rarely save a whole sheet, because the cut-outs come out of sheets you still have to buy, so many people subtract only large openings.
